Silvia Alonso: how our outputs can lead to overall goal

  • Animal health:
- A survey was carried out to see what cattle are affected in Tanzania.
- Also did a systematic literature review of zoonotic and non-zoonotic diseases and priority pathogens, what diseases are out there that can compromise production? What to look at for the trade of animals? What are the limitations and capacity needs of extension services?
  • Safe food fair food:
- We try and produce safer food even if it does not improve earnings….but it needs to be there together with more production. We are working on improving the safety of the milk.

Delia: 3 priorities this year
  1. Review certification and branding model to see if we can provide inputs
  2. Tools and tests for better fermenting: people do not know the optimal processes for fermenting. Year 1: what are the good cultures, herbs and smoke? Then we might arrange training and eventually help farmers work towards branded good yoghurt. Fermentation denatures most pathogens, we are not sure how and why, but it is effective.
  3. Multi-pathogens surveys are also a focus: we can test for 10/20 common diseases and then we might be able to better support them and provide tools for farmers.
  4. Training with animal health workers

Action points: key message from rapid integration assessment integrated in the manual
· We have TZ-adapted training material. We need additional material with capacity development that is revised based on farmer and pupil friendly. RCTs to test impact

· Mortality due to disease does not seem to be high (5, 6, 7 %) particularly in extensive areas…maybe they do not record them well….these % is good and we might need more in-depth to see if that is really so. Maybe the reason is that these are indigenous cattle and are very stable. If we modify the genetic of the herds, things might change. We are also not looking at reduced productivity…but only at animal death. We are also not looking at impact on human health.

Action point: coordinate with epidemiologist and check work in Kenya for lessons learnt

What about gender?
· Delia will send evidence from previous work. We need to draw out the gender findings separately so that it is actionable. The rapid assessment has a gender focus. The reports we have are not accessible now because they are too long. We will pull out the gender lessons and recommendations.
- They have been working with Brigitte Bagnole for gender.
- They are interested in working more with LGII and together with IFPRI people

  • 80% of farmers prefer bulls to AI…for whatever reason…and we need to take this into account


  • Working with MilkIT (IFAD funded), working for more than 1 year. Ends in December 2014 with no renewal.
  • Objectives: institutional strengthening; productivity increase, knowledge sharing.
  • One year: institutional strengthening to zoom in region and districts

- We are to choose 2 villages per district. We set up innovation platforms with producers to increase production and then connect to other stakeholders.

- We adopted the regional Tanga dairy platform…it is quite adaptive now. MilkIT became a member and we join the meetings.

- We also want to set up a dairy platform in Morogoro. We had a stakeholder meeting in March last year…we thought SNV would set up the platform in Morogoro but it did not happen and we want to work on this.

- In Tanga we heard from several participants that the forum is getting too big…with farmers and policy makers, processors, input suppliers, private sector…they are requesting us to do more village platforms. We are happy to provide a good model for village platform but can’t scale-out ourselves.
- In TZ we find some kind of passive attitudes from beneficiaries and then leaders are quite dictatorial… our planning meeting in Morogoro was 2 weeks ago. Out partner want us to set up the village innovation platforms very formally and institutionally

- A student looked at how the mobilization of villages is going and they seem to have become active and discuss about bulking milk and marketing etc…they want to start in 4 months…this shows interest and some agency but not a lot of readiness to start but it is not clear why they got so active.
- We hired Mr. Godfrie Hana (?) to drive the social process, training at district level. So the process has been kicked off and shows some dynamics.

  • We will develop feed-related interventions. We need to also make clearer who does what also vis-à-vis MoreMilkiT. We need to see opportunities and working on more domains. We also need better coordination.

Plans for 2014
· Feed interventions (technology and organization). Land has been set aside by the pastoralist and also intensive areas to plant and improve feed.

· We just learnt about the ‘onolili’- a piece of land belonging to the family managed by the women who keep one or two cattle while the men take the rest of the livestock away for months. These cows that stay on the farm are for household food. We need to know how they do it in dry times, what seed etc…we want to focus on this and with a strong gender component. Maybe we will find a student.
  • During DDF meeting we committed to a study on forage feeds: when people are aware of need and availability of good feeds…then they can’t get the seed and we need to look into this.
  • Ben: We have a PhD student who contributes outputs from the project and looks at lessons learnt and target interventions in the platforms and looking at major factors that might drive adoption of feed technologies. This will spill into other feed initiatives.
- We looked at the commercial feed supply and how to involve the sector more to reach the farmers. We might introduce a feed certification scheme and see how it might work in TZ.

- We might develop a proposal for L&F and get funds for these activities. In the meanwhile we can start doing small studies that can be integrated in the bigger project.
